Heterogeneous Photodegradation for the Abatement of Recalcitrant COD in Synthetic Tanning Wastewater

Tannery wastewater is considered one of the most contaminated and problematic wastes since it consists considerable amounts organic inorganic compounds. These contaminants result in high chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS). In this work, heterogeneous photodegradation recalcitrant COD from tanning industry was investigated, particular due to presence vegetable tannins extracted mimosa chestnut synthetic based on 4,4′ dihydroxy phenyl sulfone. TiO2 Aeroxide P-25 employed study model molecules batch conditions under different parameters, namely initial concentration COD, temperature, catalyst dose. The maximum abatement reached 60%. Additionally, preliminary kinetic investigation conducted derive main parameters that can be useful for process scale-up. It found independent temperature value but linearly dependent both loading value.
